What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form (name, email, website URL), and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. Your email will NOT be added to any mailing list or given to anyone else.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Contact forms
When contacting me through my Contact Form, I will use the name and email address you entered into the form solely to respond to your question or comment. Your email will NOT be added to any mailing list or given to anyone else.
Cookies
The only time cookies may be stored on your device is when clicking on affiliate links or banners within my posts. See Affiliates & Cookies Policy.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (currently only YouTube videos). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
Subscription forms
If you subscribe to the BigTravelNut newsletter through any form on the site, your email address will be used solely to send you the newsletter (currently once a month), occasional surveys, and possibly announcements of new products or services. In the latter case, I will give you the option to opt in or out of these marketing mailings, as required by the GDPR (General data Protection Regulation, which applies to EU residents).
You can unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time by clicking the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of every mailing.
If you subscribe to my blog via email by entering your email address in the corresponding field in my sidebar, I will use your email address solely to notify you of new blog posts. You can unsubscribe through your profile settings on wordpress.com.
Analytics
Some of the plugins I use, like Jetpack and Akismet, collect visitor information. Your can read their privacy policy here. I also use Google Analytics to gather user data such as gender, age group, language, country, and pages viewed. I receive this data in aggregate form only, with nothing that can identify individual users.
Who we share your data with
The data collected by BigTravelNut is not shared with anyone.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
If you subscribe to the blog or newsletter, the data is retained until you cancel that subscription.
What rights you have over your data
If you have left comments on this site, you can request to receive the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments are checked through an automated spam detection service. Comments are also moderated by myself.
